After 10 years of super cyclone thousands of cyclone victims in Orissa eludes from ex-gratiaOn October 29, this district has observed the tenth anniversary of 1999 super cyclone, considered as the biggest tragedy in the history of the state as well as in the district. The anniversary will be a day of stocktaking and assessing our current level preparedness to deal with natural disasters.

After ten year’s of super cyclone, several victims of the tragedy are yet to get compensation while many are living in starved condition due to official’s apathy and irregularities. Realizing it, district administration invited the application from cyclone victims to dispose their compensation case.

Brian Kloewer and Tyler Lefeber both tagged home runs and Nathan Bruck improved to 3-0 on the mound Thursday night, highlighting Harlan Community's doubleheader baseball sweep of Creston, 10-3 and 13-3 in five innings.

The No. 2-ranked (Class 3-A) Cyclones improved to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the Hawkeye 10, outhitting the 2-6, 2-2 Panthers by a combined margin of 19-5 in the two victories.

HCHS opened up an early 9-0 lead in game one behind an eight-run third inning and got another solid outing from Bruck, who allowed just one hit and one run in six innings. He walked four and struck out four as well.

Cyclone Bijli kills five in Bangladesh

Five people were killed as Cyclone Bijli hit Bangladesh's southern region, but there was no serious damage to the ports and other installations.  As the cyclone fizzled out, life began to return to normal in the coastal districts, the Chittagong and Mongla ports and Chittagong airport Friday evening, The Daily Star said on Sunday.

Bijli hit Chittagong-Cox's Bazar coast at around 7.30 p.m. Friday, weakened gradually with rainfall and fizzled out Saturday morning as it entered Rangamati in Chittagong Hill Tracts.  Five people were killed during the cyclone in Cox's Bazar, Chittagong and Noakhali Friday night, while 12 people were injured.

Cyclone Jade kills nine in Madagascar

At least nine people have been killed and more than 33,300 rendered homeless by tropical cyclone Jade on the Indian Ocean island nation of Madagascar, the authorities said Friday. A previous toll had reported eight deaths. The latest victim died in a landslide at Nosy Varika on the east coast, which seriously injured three other people said the National Office for the Management of Risks and Catastrophes.

The large island off Africa's southeast coast is highly vulnerable to seasonal cyclones. Earlier, the authorities reported the deaths of two children and their mother in the collapse of their house north of the capital Antananarivo.

But the worst affected region was Analanjirifo, north of the eastern port of Toamasina (Tamatave). The cyclone has left almost 25,000 people homeless in that area. Jane made landfall on Monday in the northeastern region of the vast island and has now left Madagascar.

Cyclone blows in and out of Tonga

Tongan residents were on edge last night as Tropical Cyclone Lin brought severe winds and flooding to the kingdom. A mighty storm - with gusts of up to 150km/h - hit the island nation early on Sunday morning, crashing down powerlines, uprooting trees and flooding properties in the capital Nuku'alofa.

Local restaurant owner and fishing guide Lothar Slabon said: It was raining, but nothing special. [Until] around one o'clock, it turned really nasty - raining really, really hard and the winds were just hitting us. "I lost a quarter of the guttering of my house."

Mr Slabon, who had seen a number of "big-time" cyclones - including Cyclone Heta in 2004 and Cyclone Hina in February - over the 16 years he has lived in Tonga, said they were lucky this time. "When it hit - wow. It was very loud, very noisy.

The Swinden Group Advises Tropical Cyclone Gael Will Strike MadagascarEvergreen, CO, February 4, 2009 – The Swinden Group, through their Severe Weather Advisories, is advising interests and travelers to Madagascar to prepare for the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Gael which could have devastating effects to the island nation.

Tropical Cyclone Gael, with sustained winds of 45 mph, is located in the southern Indian Ocean north of La Reunion and is tracking to the west towards northern Madagascar. Over the next 24 hours, Gael is expected to enter into an environment favorable for intensification.

Gael is expected to strike Madagascar in the vicinity of Toamasina (Tamatave), which is the nation’s chief port, on February 6th with winds in excess of 90 mph. Once overland, the cyclone is expected to weaken while tracking towards Antananarivo. Interests in Madagascar should be preparing for the arrival of this storm.

THE country might be experiencing a tropical cyclone, the Meteorological office reported yesterday.Acting Director of Met office David Hiriasia said if the low pressure system continues to develop we are likely to experience a tropical cyclone.

“We have moderated chances of experiencing a cyclone and at this stage we categorise the current weather situation as ‘tropical depression’, the next step just before cyclone,” he explained.Mr Hiriasia said currently there is a monsoon trough that is associated with tropical depression located at the southern part of the country.

Twin cyclones hit Madagascar

The Indian Ocean island of Madagascar was being hit by two tropical cyclones arriving from opposite directions on Tuesday.Tropical Cyclone Eric made landfall on Monday in the eastern Fenerive-Est region of the world's fourth-largest island at wind speeds of around 100km/h, local media reported on Tuesday.

Government buildings, schools and shops in the area remained closed Monday and power supplies were deliberately suspended for safety reasons until the storm had passed.There were no reports yet of major damage or injuries.

At the same time, the west was bracing for the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Fanele. Heavy rains had already begun to fall over the north as the cyclone moved southwards, causing widespread flooding that left close to 250 people homeless in the Sofia region.

A CYCLONE could develop off the north coast as early as tomorrow.And several weather warnings have also been issued.

A cyclone watch has been declared for a developing tropical low for coastal and island communities from Cockatoo Island in Western Australia to the Territory border.

A flood threat advice has been issued for the western Top End.And a coastal waters' wind warning was released.

For the next two days with seas predicted to rise to 2.5m and winds to 60kmh.The risk that a low in the Timor Sea may form into a cyclone tomorrow remains more than 50 per cent.
